Heather J. Bennett, author
Heather J. Bennett writes retro fiction set against the backdrop of 1970s and 1980s rock and roll. Her stories reimagine the hidden lives of musicians in the golden era of California’s Laurel Canyon and beyond.
Bennett’s novels peel back the curtain on fame to reveal the personal costs, hidden fractures, and complicated bonds of an era defined by music, excess, and reinvention. Her work goes beyond the hype and glamour of rock’n’roll, portraying the complexities of ambition, love, and the toll of achieving the dream. She was recognized for her short story, “Amsterdam,” by SouthWest Writers, earning a Second Place award for Romance in 2021.
Although originally from Long Island, NY, Heather’s journey led her to Dallas, TX, where she currently resides (y’all). By day, she works as a Marketing Manager to pay the bills, but it’s during her leisure time that she truly thrives, focusing on her passion for writing while carefully attending to the whims of her vocal feline companion.
Bennett was encouraged by exceptional teachers who recognized her creative potential. They urged her to explore the depths of her imagination and delve into the intricacies of the written word. She continued her love for writing and earned a degree in English with a Concentration in Creative Writing from the State University of New York, College at Fredonia.
Her works of retro fiction include Letting Go (2019), Expecting to Fly (2020), Flipping the Record (2023), and her latest release, Helplessly Hoping (2024).
She continues to work on several projects that are eagerly vying to become her next novel. Her dedication to retro fiction and her love for the music of past decades fuel her creative spirit, keeping the echoes of the 1970s and 1980s alive on the page.
